20 nets = 1 child’s life

Statistically, 20 long-lasting insecticide treated nets installed = one child’s life saved.

This is because the impact on mortality rates of bednet use is one life saved per 160 bednet years.

Each long-lasting insecticide treated net is effective for 4 years and on average 2 children sleep under each net.

Therefore 20 nets x the 4 year life of each net x 2 children under each net = 160 bednet years… = 1 life saved.

Each LLIN costs US$5. That’s US$100 a life.

Using the above figures – can we save the lives of 50 Children in Ruhanga ?????

I have accepted an offer from the charity www.againstmalaria.com to supply 1,000 top grade mosquito nets to over 400 homes around Uganda Lodge at a cost of just £3 each. These LLIN nets are made from material that is impregnated with insecticides and they never need respraying – they are effective for the life of the net which is usually betwen 5 and 10 years.

Uganda Lodge fits the criteria for being a high “at risk” area for malaria. Over the next few years having this blanket coverage in place would stop the mosquitoes from biting and passing on the malaria parasite. It will potentially save many lives – especially those of young children, pregnant women and people of all ages with low immune systems.

CAN YOU HELP by making a donation towards supplying some of the nets – or alternatively introducing me to someone who may help?

I have to get £1,000 deposit together by mid-July to confirm the order and then will be allocated a fund-raising page on their website to help raise the other £2,000

Please email or call me with constructive ideas or with offers of help

Thanks must go to Ben and Sarah Digby who are coming out to Uganda for 3 weeks this July. They have recently paid for a Ntungamo Water Supply Engineering Company to survey the hills above Ruhanga to source the best route down the hillside to supply clean piped water down to our village and our schools.

Video – Typical Water Source in Ruhanga

This survey has given us an initial estimated cost of £5,500 ($8,000USD) to get the water to our immediate neighbours in Migorora, the Rughanga Development Nursery & Primary School and to Uganda Lodge itself. After this initial work is completed, several hundred more people living nearby could easily benefit from this initial work with additional funding of £4,700 for Cell 2 and £2,500 for Cell 3 being made available.

Video – Completed Water Project in West Ntungamo

BACKGROUND Most of the people living around Ruhanga Village, Uganda are subsistence farmers, having a small plot of land around their house on which to grow a few vegetables and keep a couple of goats and chickens. They have a very basic home, usually consisting of two or three rooms and built with locally made mud bricks and a roof of either thatched banana leaves and grass or rusting iron sheets. They have no power and rely mainly on candles or oil lamps. Much of their day is spent fetching water, a significant walk away to a dilapidated well and collecting wood (jobs often relegated to children before and after school) tending their gardens, preparing and cooking their food, and perhaps looking after a sick or elderly relative. Many families also care for one or two extra orphan children in their midst.

The whole village is in the process of a proactive regeneration project, led by the community and assisted by the UK registered Charity ‘Let Them Help Themselves Out of Poverty’. The community have already made significant progress in developing trade through selling handmade crafts, pottery and matting and have opened a guest house to catch passing eco/wildlife tourist trade, called Uganda Lodge. To continue their development, the community would seek your assistance in providing partial or full funding for the construction of this water gravity system, enabling them to construct a pipeline to the village from a clean, free flowing, and mountain source.

School has ended for three weeks holiday and the students return on 23rd May. Over the past fortnight we admitted around 30 new students who are either orphans or from poorest families in our three local villages.

Now I need to find some kind people who will sponsor the cost of their school fees at just £3.50 ($6USD) per month. This will give them a new uniform each – now being made by women in the village – full-time tuition, a large cup of daily porrage for breakfast, and it will buy for them all the books pencils and crayons they need.

If you feel able to help one or more of these children please email me direct ann@annmccarthy.co.uk

For the past week Ann McCarthy (a 67 year old fiesty British grandmother of 5) and I, along with our translator Amon, have been traveling up the vast and lush hills in the Ruhanga Village with a mission to find disadvantaged families and orphaned children who are in need of assistance. We started at the bottom of the thick hills and trekked all the way to the top going from house to house.

We visited and photographed children, interviewed parents/guardians and gathered detailed information about each family unit. We came across many families who only had one parent/guardian as, in most cases, the other one has had their life taken by HIV.

Many single parents are left alone to tend to 4-7 children, as well as cook, clean, dig [farm], and attempt earn an income. We learned that many families in the Ruhanga village cannot afford to send their children to school (a school term is is approximately $20 which includes breakfast, school supplies, books, and uniforms) as they do not earn an income (this is not due to laziness or unintelligence but rather due to an immense lack of opportunity).

During our travels we came across several children who were infected by illness such as malaria and polio. We saw children fetching and drinking water from unsanitary streams, and we visited with many parents/guardians living with HIV.

Ann McCarthy and the volunteers of Uganda Lodge are determined to improve the lives of these children by supplying them with an education. With your help we can improve the lives of the Ruhanga children by sending them to school for the little amount of $5 or 3.50 UK pounds per month (A low cost of $60 (42 UKP) a year can supplies a full year of schooling, as well as a uniform, school supplies, books, and breakfast).

The following photographs are of some of the children who are in need of your help. These children are between the ages of 4-7 and have parents who cannot afford to send them to school. By sponsoring a young girl or boy you are enhancing the life of a Ruhanga child by supplying them with a satisfying breakfast and a start of a good education.

We hope that these photographs will act as a catalyst for awareness showing you a world that is far different from the one we know.

As well as international volunteers I am looking for help with admin for our project – here in my home office at Shepperton. I would like to find an organised person with some telephone and computer skills and I am sure together we would be able to do so much more for the villagers around Ruhanga.

This could suit an early retired person, someone looking for a new interest between jobs, or perhaps a young person needing to do some volunteering towards their Gold DofE, Queens Scout etc.

If you are unable to give your time, can you offer a suitable prize for our forthcoming raffle? Maybe voucher for meal out in a restaurant or a beauty therapy session, or can you offer a few days break in a holiday home in the sun?

If you can help please contact Ann in UK ON 01932 562757 Many Thanks

Thanks to the funding that has come through our most recent volunteers, namely Joanne, Carl and Tasha, Ryan and Bec and Jess from Australia, we have been able to add the roof timbers and purchase over 50 iron sheets to complete covering the roof area. Now we will be able to open a Primary One Class in February – which parents have been enthusiastically requesting ever since we started the Nursery School in 2008 .

In time, as funding allows, we plan to add doors and windows, concrete the floor, plaster the walls and get desks and benches made by local carpenters.

They only stayed a week but were brilliant help. This new classroom will be for Primary one students aged approx 6-7 years, to attend once they leave the Nursery School.

We are looking for funding to enable us to add the roofing timbers and iron sheets. It would be great if we could open it in time for the new school year which starts early February…we already have a list of children hoping to enroll.

Although not free we charge parents minimum fees – just enough to cover teachers salaries, breakfast porridge and teaching aids – and we already have a number of orphan and disadvantaged children who do attend for just a small donation. We plan to continue this practice with the Primary school

Can you help us out by donating something this Christmas?
